Re: xi5-p wireless box setup issue

How do I enter the manual setup mode instead of WPS on the Xi5?  I had it once but cannot locate it again.

The Xi5 will only connect to a Comcast gateway (Xb3/XB6 ), not to a personal modem. The moca necessity is the DVR communicates with the gateway via moca, and then the gateway communicates with the Xi5 wirelessly.

With the guide up, highlight NBC (or whichever channel) , left arrow, press record, arrow down to set start time, duration up to 12 hours and the date and confirm. It only recorded the amount of time you had because that’s the time slot and it happened to go over

since you have 2 wireless boxes you might try swapping the two boxes and see what happens.

After a trying 6-hour Xfinity installation appointment yesterday, and nearly an hour on chat with tech support today, here's what I think I've learned. Can someone tell me if i'm wrong, or if you see another way to get this done?

My current setup:

- Arris 8200 Modem, DOCSIS 3.1. No Wi-Fi or MoCA with this box, just a straight-up modem. Attached to house's Comcast feed from street via one arm of a splitter.

- X1 non-DVR box, attached to main house Comcast feed via other arm of splitter; this powers the  "main" TV over a coax connection. This is working well.

- secondary box for upstairs TV; first attempt it was ? maybe xi3 box; final attempt xi5P; doesn't work.

I use Unifi Networks gear, including a gateway and a switch, and a WiFi transmitter on each floor of a 3-floor townhouse. The place has ethernet and coax in-wall, which terminate in a closet in usual disorderly, poorly-labeled builder style. (Built 2013). So my modem, gateway, and switch live in the wiring closet, and the WiFi transmitters are hardwired to the system thru the switch. All works well.

I wasn't here to witness the installation (poor wife), but evidently the tech got internet service going (which I later got configured into my LAN/WiFi networks) at nearly gig speeds. So far so good. And the main TV works fine. I'm not sure which secondary box he was trying to install at first, but he ran afoul of "cable" issues. Perhaps he was trying to connect the primary X1 box via in-wall coax run to the upstairs secondary box? At any rate, he failed. I convinced him to leave us the xi5-P box so I could try to make it work, but evidently it's incompatible with the Arris 8200 modem because the Arris lacks MoCA.

MoCA is a protocol that allows ethernet signals to propagate over coax, correct? If this is so, then what the secondary box "wants" is ethernet. Indeed, the xi5P has both WiFi and ethernet connection ability. Not sure why it *has* to be MoCA.

I'd rather keep this modem, and figure a workaround for the upstairs TV. I have tried to set up the xi5P box by connecting it to my network via ethernet or WiFi. My system recognizes it and assigns it a local, internal IP address, but the box won't complete its startup routine. "Connection" issues errors pop up. I've even connected it directly to the second ethernet port on the modem; no dice.

I'm tempted to think that there's a port or VLAN setting that would allow this to work; but if so, Comcast/Xfinity ain't sharing it!

Anyone have any insight on this? Thanks all!

you could use the MoCA enabled Comcast gateway/modem and put it in bridge mode, feeding the ethernet output to your router/network.

This is what I am worried about as well so it is working (I did nothing to it) since I woke up so maybe a patch came last night.  I am giving it a couple of sleep cycles and will call on Monday to get my week's worth of credit.

I am using a home theater in a box set up. I have noticed this as well, it is down right pathetic as I have to crank the volume. My receiver does not have an auto setting where it levels out all the speakers.

This is on my X1 box by the way.

My Sony TV has a feature to blank out the picture, but other than that I don't think it can be done.

Don't quite understand what you say.  Do you mean the TV doesn't have any screen size setting?

Are you using the HDMI cable?

The X1 has a Setting for screen settings.

I have the same problem. Started yesterday, I have the sony XBR900 which I got 4 years ago and upgraded to the X1 version 3 box a year ago. I guess the X1 did an upgrade which recently caused this. It is connected to the main X1 recording box with a monster ultra HDMI cable. Power saving is set to "off". Only fix is powering off X1 box and then waiting 4 minutes to watch TV. On the 3 other TV's in the house using remote boxes they all work fine even when the main box and Sony aren't communicating via hdmi.

Same thing started happening to me about a week or two ago.  I have a Sony KDL800B that's ~ 4 years old.  It definately appears to be an HDMI handshake issue that popped up with some sort of X1 software update.  I noticed these issues when my software version started jumping to 87.1.3 up to 88.x ... my software version is now back to 87.1.3 again and still having the issue.  I've had my X1V3 (Arris) box for a while and never had issues.

From troublshooting ... If I stay on my X1 HDMI input I have no issues.  If I switch to another input and turn the TV off, when I turn it back on after a few minutes I get no signal on the X1 input.  I need to cyle the X1 power to get a signal back.  Switching inputs does nothing.  BUT, if the power remains on for my TV, I can switch inputs and back to the X1 input later and it does not lose singal.  It appears the HDMI handshake issue occurs when the TV is powered down when NOT on the X1 input.  Atleast that's what I think is happeneing with my Sony TV.

As others report, this was not an issue until the past week or so, and I noticed the X1 box has been getting updates with the version # jumping around.  This is something on Comcast's side and also appears it may now be affecting other some other brands as well (Vizio?)

Obviously, it is when I'm switching back to Xfinity, from either Apple TV or ROKU, that I get the blue screen.  I'm now getting used t unplugging the cable box and rebooting it.  Seems to work.  Not a good solution, but what can you expect for $250 a month? !!

I just wanted to close on this topic in case anyone else may encounter a similar issue.

I went ahead and purchased the EVO-1 9 port amp and rewired my entire house (took 2 days).  I purchased quad shield RG-6 pure copper cable and ran direct runs to all points in the house, 6 all together.  I no longer have any splitters or cables spliced together with connectors.

That has revolved the issue.  I can now get all channels clearly, the downstream signal at my modem went from -6.5 to +2 while the upstream went from 50 down to 42.  I'm glad I went ahead and did it.  The installation is much cleaner as I no longer have cable wires running along the floors of the bedrooms (I dropped the lines down the walls from the attic and put in cable outlets).

What is the input port on an xi5-p wireless box used for?

Nothing at all (same as the other X1 boxes that have it)

Nope, I went to bed and just woke up and it is Zoomed in again so how much longer of this nonsense?  Is this a move to try and force people to buy new televisions and pay them 10 dollars more per month so the HDMI connector is turned on?
