Re: Adding a Wireless Box

Lisa,

I feel your pain. I just upgraded from tv/internet to include voice.  The technician mentioned I could now use a wireless box, which would allow me to move it to different rooms, as well as pair with Bluetooth headphones.  He said I could go to my local store and swap boxes.

So I head to my local store to swap boxes and am rudely told they don’t have those boxes.  I told her the technician said I could come down and swap, to which she responded they don’t know what they are talking about.  I ask if she can order the box for me and she says she cannot, I will need to call myself.  Seems odd that she doesn’t have the same capability as the call center, but whatever.  She then adds that they will probably charge me $15 to ship to me.  A bit annoying that I would need to pay for an item they choose not to stock, but not the end of the world.

When I get home, I log in to a chat session with a rep and he eventually tells me the xi5 is available in my area.  I ask him to ship me two, since I figure I can use one for portability and the other for bt connection in my bedroom, and if I am paying $15 to ship one, might as well get a second for a little bit extra in shipping.  That’s when he advises that there will be a $60 fee.  I ask why so much to ship two small boxes and he tells me it must be professionally installed.  Huh?  Plug it into an outlet and connect to WiFi requires an expert? Yep, apparently so.

i ask if he can waive the setup fee as I have been a Comcast customer for 30 years and he says nope, that’s what it costs.  Sadly, that ended out chat session...

The problem is that you just have an HD box (XG2), there’s no DVR capabilities. You can upgrade to a DVR anytime

Yes, that’s exactly right. You need a DVR to record.

I just got a new box with the XR15 Remote and my Bolva TV isn't listed. How do I set up my remote control to control my TV?

I suffer the same terrible customer experience of unwanted recordings showing up in my recording schedule.  Every ten days or so I have to DELETE 50 or more recordings that have a program's generic description and therefore do not state repeat or new implicitly.  While Comcast may have no control over the description provided, my suspicion is they do have control over the search criteria to build the recording schedule.  My observation is that the search criteria looks for the "repeat" indicator, and absent that, adds the show to the recording technology.  This is simple technology, folks.  If the search criteria instead looked implicitly for the "new" indicator, it would provide a much more satisfying customer experience.  I have seen some network shows initially provide a generic description, but within a week of airtime, they convert to "new".  These shows would get added to the schedule appropriately.  To me, this is just a matter of Comcast not considering the customer experience aspect of the situation and preferring to point the finger at something outside their control, instead of putting their best minds at solving an unacceptable customer experience situation by changing things within their control.

Ok. However supporting Dolby VIson is a software/firmware thing so maybe it will be capable in the future. If not no big deal we will just get new boxes in the future.

I will have to think on reconfiguring my system for a day or two to see if it acts any differently just connected to the TV but I suspect that I will be able to reprodice the issues in that configuration. What I am doing is not that much differnet and there should not be issues since NOTHNING else in my envoromnmnt has these issues except for HDR functionality with NetFlix on the Xg1V4. Having spend an enormous amount of time on this issue I'm not sure I'm willing to spend more given that I'm the customer paying an enormous amount to Comcast for service wach month and not being compensated in any way for my trouble other than endless frustration dealing with support. Might be considered entertainment, learning and knowledge but I have abot a million other things I would rather be doing with my time. This evening when I go home I will snake the v4 HDMI directly to the TV and religate myself to fiber from the TV to the AVR for the week. I will do a few start-ups/shutdowns in my usual activities and see if I can trip it up. If I can't then problem solved at east in the eyes of Comcast but you must realize that there are way more less simple and complicated set-ups out there that you need to be compatable with; AVRs, soundbars, home theaters etc. Reminde me of the early days with the Moto HDMI boxes. I had the same issues. Worked to TV, did not work or had issues/work arounds with AVR, switcheds etc. All those issues were corected over time on the legacy boxes and hopfully over time they will be on X1 and with 4k.

Dolby Vision requires specific hardware, it is not only a software/firmware thing. The XG1v4 will never support DV.

Before jumping through the hoops of changing your setup around, can you give me details on how things are connected? What I've been able to gather is that you have the XG1v4 connected to the HDMI input port of an Oppo 203 with one ouput of the Oppo going to the TV and one going to an AVR. Anything else in the path? Do other devices work properly with HDR when passed through the Oppo?

I finally got around to connecting the Xgv4 direclty to the TV. It acts much better and more happy there. No surprise. I need to let it sit for a nght and see what it does but HDR10 on NF seems to work this way no matter what after power on/off/on etc. where with the switch and Oppo it has issues. My guess is that it is something funky with the Oppo and not the switch but either could be causing the issue. It's odd though since the OnDemand HDR10 qComcast owend assets always play without trouble. It's just the blasted NF app on this box that is having issues. Yet anther case of initiall incompatability with switches, AVRs and other types of gear that many of us with home theaters have/run into. My hope is that over time this issue will get better and not worse. That was the case with AVRs with both the legacy Moto boxes and initailly when X1 come out. In both those cases things got worse before they get better. The folks that engineer these things tend to forget that not everyone connects the box direclty to a TV and wth this box I would say that the possibility that it will be connected to an AVR or projetor through a switch/splitter/extractor etc. is rather higher than the old boxes. Just glad there is a work arund that works.

Your response intrigued me.  My next TV (I hope vbg) should be able to be my connection controller; my a/v receiver, DVD player, and X1 box will be connected to the TV rather than the other way around like I have it now.  What that means for Comcast testing, I have no clue, but your point about a/v receiver supprt (and HDMI Link, etc) leads me to believe it is going to be a while before the X1 platform can support future equipment.

Ya it seems to be a work in progress. I put they system back the way I want it and convinced not that it is the Oppo that is causing the issue since I had to reset it to get HDR back with NF on the X1 box. It's not a major deal. Hopfully they will do some updates to the HDMI input on that player before the last person turns off the lights. If not at least there is a workaround.

I was going to post that my other box still had not got the new update, but it has now. There is a Friday date/time stamp so I think that is when it got it. I was beginning to wonder when it would finaly get it. Important since you never know when I will have to swap boxes and/or find a deal on another 4k TV.

Same problem here. Screen freezes when trying to start something from the DVR or when changing the channel. Over and again. I have called and they send a reset but it still happens all the time.

X1 showing PSt

My X1 box is showing PSt on the display and I’m trying to figure out how to fix it. My cable has been goin in and out for the past few days and has been out for over 24 hours straight now. I have tried unplugging it several times and have also tried resetting and refreshing it from My Account online. Is it possible to fix this without having to call customer service?

The DVR is showing offline but if the signal levels of your modem is any indication, your upstream signal levels are too high and the DVR can't connect. You need a tech out

I just switched to Xfinity after being a FiOS customer for 9.5 years. I have 1 HD  DVR with 2 small HD boxes. In less than 1 day, I noticed different TVs freezing. Then realized the DVR was constantly rebooting on Day 2. I tried the Power Save off setting as well on Day 3, with no success. I called Customer Service and now have a tech scheduled for what will be my Day 6. I hope they can fix it as I will not settle for this. But reading this thread makes me believe it’s a widespread issue with the DVRs. It appears to reset at least every hour of watching any of the 3 TVs. However I am not losing internet as my streaming devices seems fine while binge watching.

I’ll post what I find out on Tuesday with the tech visit...

series not marked 'new' will aways be recorded if the series exists on that channel.

you describe classic bad signal in your home outlet issues. Also, swap out one of your smaller boxes for an Xg2 (has its own tuner and it will loan a tuner to the other small box and not take a channel tuner from the DVR.

My two small companion boxes not working...

Have had this problem for three weeks. Tech comes out mumbling the whole time pants sagging and has to be 12 and know absolutely nothing. Changes the coax cable to stop freezing issue on bedroom boxes. Then next thing you know he says it didn’t work and he will have to send another tech out with an amplifier. After telling him one had been installed he said it may be bad and that he has to send another tech out Sunday. Sunday came no tech so I had to switch the appt cause he set it for a day I work and still waiting. Well after he left the boxes stop working all together. They won’t connect to the dvr box. The guy also changed my modem which I had no problem with. X1 is not working in either bedroom and this guy did nothing. Don’t understand why the boxes don’t have their own tuners? Can anyone help?
